• Look for outrigger canoe clubs that offer rec programs. You usually pay a base membership fee, then have access to club rec paddles. During race season (April-September) priority usually goes to racers, but almost always there are seats open.

• Stay balanced and centered. Begining paddlers in OC tend to lean left to stay dry, but once you learn to embrace a light ama, it all opens up from there. OC-1 experience helps a ton here too.

• I am, always have been, and always will be, a member of the engine room. Seat 4 feels most like home, though I enjoy trying out other seats all the time. Yes, my okole has been wedged sideways in seat 1 on occasion ...
